BSOS Dean's Student Advisory Council

Emma Barringer is a junior pursuing dual degrees in International Relations and Economics. This is her first year serving as Vice Chair of Student Services and the Living and Learning Representative on the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. During her term, she hopes to improve the student experience within BSOS through initiatives focused on student resources, professional development, and community engagement. Emma is passionate about public service, government, and international affairs and hopes to pursue a career centered on public policy and service. She has gained experience in public service through internships with the U.S. House of Representatives and Refugee Housing Solutions, where she has worked on constituent services, policy research, and projects supporting refugee communities. On campus, Emma serves as Secretary of UMD Mock Trial, works as a Student Advocate at the Undergraduate Student Legal Aid Office, and is an Ambassador with TerpsVote.

Juan Gomez Martin is a junior pursuing dual degrees in Psychology and Criminology & Criminal Justice. This is his first year serving as the Psychology Representative on the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. He is passionate about advocating for students and creating opportunities that promote connection, inclusion, and academic and professional growth within the BSOS community. Juan currently works as a Research Assistant in the Restoring H.O.P.E. Lab, where he is interested in research on mental health, trauma, and justice involvement. He previously participated in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, where he conducted an independent quantitative research project examining how justice involvement affects family support and suicidality among adolescents. Outside of DSAC and research, Juan has been involved with the Playtime Project and Court Watch Montgomery, where he has gained experience supporting underserved communities and learning about the intersection of social services and the justice system. He plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and a career focused on clinical research and improving mental health outcomes for underserved populations.

Gina Youn is a senior majoring in Psychology and Criminology & Criminal Justice, with a minor in Law & Society. This is her first year serving on DSAC as an At-Large Representative, and she is excited to join the Student Services Committee to help strengthen alumni connections, improve campus facilities, and create more networking opportunities for BSOS students. Gina has a strong passion for social justice, with a particular focus on juvenile justice. This past summer, Gina interned with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, working in both the Intake and Probation units. Through this experience, she developed a deeper understanding of the school-to-prison pipeline and how early intervention can change its course for young people. Working alongside case managers and program specialists, she reviewed treatment service plans, observed intake interviews, and accompanied staff on home visits and court proceedings. She also visited the Cheltenham Youth Facility and the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center, gaining a firsthand look at the juvenile justice system that solidified her commitment to advocating for at-risk youth. This experience has shaped her goal of pursuing a career in juvenile justice advocacy and public policy. After graduation, Gina plans to pursue a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration along with Family Science, with hopes of working to improve systems that support adolescents and their families. Outside of DSAC, Gina is a Desk Operations Supervisor with UMD ResLife, a Security Operations Center Monitor for the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), and a BSOS Peer Mentor. She is excited to bring the perspective she has gained from these roles to DSAC and to help build a more connected and supported BSOS community.
