Student Services Committee

This committee improves student life through technology, alumni relations, facilities, and other non-academic issues. The committee aims to reach students, provide them with networking opportunities, and improve student life outside the classroom.

Avery Vess

Vice-Chair | Hearing and Speech Sciences Representative

Avery Vess is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park majoring in Hearing and Speech Sciences (HESP). This is her second year serving as the HESP Representative of DSAC and she is currently the Vice-Chair of Student Services. Avery is passionate about research! She is a Research Assistant for the Cognition and Language Processing Lab, Lab Manager for Language and Fluency Lab, a member of the Departmental Honors Program for HESP, and recently participated in the BSOS Summer Research Initiative. Previously, she was a research intern at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. Other leadership roles she has includes being on the Executive Board for Mortar Board Honors Society, CLISO, and working as a Desk Operations Supervisor for ResLife.

Taylor-Simone Johnson

African American Studies Representative

Taylor-Simone is a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park double majoring in African American Studies and Criminology and Criminal Justice. This is her second year serving as the African American Studies student representative on the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. Taylor-Simone has a continuous interest in the advancement of Black people and the dismantling of racial  inequity in America. She is skilled in many areas of expertise including leadership, team building, and time management. Her professional work experience includes the Office of the States Attorney, the Mayor’s Office of Baltimore City, and the B&O Railroad Museum.

Zoe

Hill

Anthropology Representative

Zoe Hill is a junior Anthropology and Psychology double major, with a minor in Spanish. This is her second year on DSAC acting as the Anthropology representative and a member of the Student Services committee. Her main goal within Student Services is to make the various resources available to BSOS students more accessible and known in order to help foster a better sense of community and feeling of support for the students within the college. Overall, building community is very important to Zoe, which is why she became a Resident Assistant last year. Additionally, Zoe’s biggest passion is sports and outside of DSAC she is the President of The Pride, UMD’s student section, and a team manager for the men’s lacrosse team.

Sinan Machado

At-Large Representative

Sinan is a senior Government and Politics major with a concentration in International Relations. She is passionate about addressing global issues, particularly humanitarian ones, and learning more about politics in Spain, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This is her first year serving on the Dean’s Student Advisory Council as a member of the Student Services Committee. As a transfer student, her goal is to help fellow transfer students and advocate for mental health. In addition to serving as a member of DSAC, she is a BSOS Peer Mentor, Global Fellow, and student worker in the Office of the Dean.
